School Wellness Plan
In accordance with Public Law 108.265 Section 204, St. John Bosco School has created a written School Wellness Policy. The goal of this policy is to provide students with sound nutrition information and to model healthy eating habits so students will learn to make healthy eating choices. Students in grades pre school through grade eight will also be presented with information on exercise, disease prevention, and hygiene.
It is the policy of St. John Bosco School to involve students, teachers, staff, parents, food service professionals, health professionals and other interested community members in developing, implementing, monitoring, and reviewing nutrition and physical activity practices of the school.
Section 1
Nutrition Education Goals
It is the goal of St. John Bosco School to present students with information on healthy nutrition options. At each grade level, students are presented with nutritional guidelines that will lead to good health. Students are also presented with the opportunity to purchase a well-balanced meal each day for breakfast and/or lunch. Students may also purchase healthy snacks during lunch breaks. In addition, students do not have access to vending machines that sell unhealthy foods. Furthermore, pop is not sold anywhere in the building and bringing pop from home is also prohibited. Fast food is not allowed.
Goals:
All students are taught about the importance of a good breakfast and encouraged to start each day with a healthy meal.
Nutrition education is a big part of each student’s health curriculum.
Nutrition education is taught throughout the curriculum in classes such as science, social studies, math, and language arts.
Parents are taught about the importance of nutrition education.
Teachers, through professional development, learn about recent research in the field of nutrition education.

Section 2
Physical Activity Goals
It is the goal of St. John Bosco School to provide various opportunities for students to participate in physical activity throughout the school day. Students are expected to get physical exercise at recess, at lunch breaks, and during their regularly scheduled physical education classes. These classes follow the Indiana Academic Standards for physical education. Besides the regular school day, students in grades 5-8 are given the opportunity to participate on school sponsored athletic teams. Younger students are encouraged to participate in park sponsored athletic leagues.
Goals:
Physical education classes include individual activities as well as competitive and non-competitive team sports to encourage life-long activity.
Information, through parent newsletters, is provided to families to help them incorporate physical activity into their student’s lives.
A daily recess period is provided to all students.
Students are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular physical activities.
Adequate equipment is available for all students to use when participating in physical education.
The playground area is safe and properly supervised at all times.
Section 3
Nutrition Standards
It is the goal of St. John Bosco School to promote healthy eating habits and lifestyle choices through what it offers students to eat throughout the school day. The lunches served at school are designed to offer a well-balanced meal representing all the food pyramid groups. Students are offered a variety of food from the meat, fruit/vegetable, whole grain, and dairy groups each day. Sweets are limited in size and number and pop is prohibited. Breakfast is offered daily. Students are offered a grain, fruit and milk for breakfast. Our food service workers are trained in appropriate food preparation, cleanliness, and meal planning details.
Goals:
Meals served through the National School Lunch Program:
Are appealing and attractive to children.
Are served in clean and pleasant settings.
Meet, at minimum, nutrition requirements established by local, state, and federal regulations.
Offer a variety of fruits and vegetables.
Serve only reduced fat, low-fat, or fat free milk.
All foods made available on campus comply with current USDA guidelines.
Classroom snacks feature healthy food choices.
Lunch periods provide adequate time for students to eat their lunches.
Parents are encouraged to prepare healthy lunches for students to bring to school.
Section 4
Other Student Activities Related to Wellness
It is the goal of St. John Bosco School to promote a total overall healthy attitude in all of our students. Students learn the importance of being physically active and having healthy eating patterns. This knowledge is gained through direct teaching in the classroom, modeling by faculty, and parental reinforcement.
Goals:
The school environment is safe, comfortable, and enough time for eating is given to all students.
Support for the health of all students is demonstrated by hosting health clinics, fit for life workshops, and nutritional guest speakers.
The after school Adventure Club encourages physical activity and healthy habit formation.
Food is not to be used as a reward or punishment for student behaviors.
Parental reinforcement of all health related issues is encouraged.
Section 5
Goals for Measurement and Evaluation
It is the goal of St. John Bosco School that all students make healthy choices. Good food choices and proper physical activity are the basis for this Wellness Plan.
Goals:
Classroom discussions on nutrition and physical activity are used to determine the plan’s effectiveness on changing students’ behaviors.
Student testing in health class is used to evaluate knowledge gained on the issues of nutrition and exercise.
This entire plan will be reviewed and revised annually.
